Effects of Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluent in a Receiving Stream on Reproductive Behavior of Fathead Minnows (Pimephales promelas)

چکیده

Wastewater treatment plant effluents contain a variety of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including with estrogenic activity such as 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethinyl estradiol (EE2), and nonylphenols. These substances can affect both behavior physiology in vertebrate animals. To explore the presence effects these EDCs natural setting, juvenile adult male fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas, were held cages upstream downstream effluent site wastewater for 21 days subsequently tested changes reproductive behaviors production vitellogenin. Additionally, stream was measured using yeast bioassay. Estrogenicity found to be significantly higher when compared levels upstream. Vitellogenin did not show correlational pattern estrogenicity water, but two measures occurred less often males than males. This suggests that brief (three-week) exposure water containing bring about fish may more sensitive low environmental disruptors vitellogenin production.

Behavioral avoidance of fluoranthene by fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas).

A monitoring system was used to examine the behavioral response of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) to plumes of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon fluoranthene. Previously unexposed fish and fish surviving acute exposure to fluoranthene were presented with three different concentrations of fluoranthene. Both groups of fish avoided fluoranthene. Pre-exposure did not enhance or diminish av...

Determination of vitellogenin kinetics in male fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas).

A lack of knowledge persists concerning the combination of kinetics on protein and mRNA levels of the most commonly used biomarker for estrogenic influences-vitellogenin (VTG). Consequently, male fathead minnows were exposed to 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE(2)) for 35 days, followed by an equally long depuration period in a flow-through system. VTG mRNA levels reached a plateau after 3 days of e...

Immunomodulatory effects of beta-glucan on neutrophil function in fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas Rafinesque, 1820).

Stimulatory effects of yeast beta-1,3-1,6-glucans on neutrophils have long been recognized, but effects of glucans on degranulation of primary granules in fish neutrophils have not been previously reported. Neutrophil function was monitored during in vitro and in vivo application of glucans to non- (NS), acute- (AS) and chronically stressed (CS) fish. beta-Glucan proved to be a strong and quick...

Gene expression of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) exposed to two types of treated municipal wastewater effluents.

Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in treated municipal effluents have the potential to adversely impact exposed organisms prompting elevated public concern. Using transcriptomic tools, we investigated changes in gene expression and cellular pathways in the liver of male fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) exposed to 5% concentrations of full secondary-treated (HTP) or advanced primary-t...

The effect of mercury on the feeding behavior of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas).

Fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) were exposed to mercury (1.69, 6.79, and 13. 57 microg/L HgCl(2), 10 days exposure), and afterward their foraging ability was tested in a vegetated habitat for 7 days. Among the foraging metrics used were foraging efficiency, capture speed, and the ability to learn and retain information regarding habitat characteristics. In addition to behavioral tests, mu...
